I can't believe i haven't posted anything here for nearly a year! Well that's what happens when you loose your camera in a foreign country.
This pic is pretty recent and as you can see Nyah is as cute as ever.
Sal and I did a joint parenting course recently and it was really good. Janet Poulsen is an extraordinary women who has followed a passion for children's development all the way back from teaching high school, to primary school, kindergarten and now teaching parents so she can get to the kids as early as possible. After so many years of teaching and research the course is so good and the results are just great. It just works and the kids love you for it! The biggest thing I learned was about developmentally appropriate parenting. Every parent should do it!
She's an incredibly good and easy kid.. and she really is a kid now. She loves to read books, can read her own name and all the numbers, loves pink, fairies, Dora the explora (we went to see her at the magic cave and she wasn't interested in seeing father xmas again.. only Dora) and is just starting to enter the world of real imagination. Can't wait to read her the faraway tree series! She loves animals as all kids do, loves being outside, swimming and playing at the beach, flying kites, puzzles and games, friends and family. I'm not sure if she's spoilt.. being an only child and getting loads of attention at both houses. I think so but she doesn't act it.. I guess we'll find out.
She has a great sense of humour and fun and knows what she wants without being hard to manage. I like to think we've done a good job with her but i also think that she's naturally a happy personality.
Most of the time when she comes over on the weekend we go out to the beach, up to "Nana and Gradpa's" or go do something. The rest of the time we play games, play puzzles on the computer or jigsaws, read books or do jobs around my flat. She loves to help out.
Hopefully i'll get some more pictures for everyone from mum's camera soon.

She's a big girl now
13th May 2006 at my old house (Johnstone Ave).
I've just come back from 7 weeks overseas and i'm missing my little girl terribly. Going to Sal's this weekend to spend some time with her and you can expect a decent update sometime soon with new pics and my astounded comments on how much she's grown in just 8 weeks.

Nyah - October 2005
She's turning into a real little girl now. She's learned to say no, has 14 teeth, weighs 14 kgs and is really tall and coordinated for a 21 month old baby. She can throw and catch (sometimes) and seems to understand almost everything we say.

Nyah - July 2005

Finally i have found a way to upload more pictures to this blog. Expect lots more pics over the coming months.
So i'm finally going to update Nyah's blog but be warned it's full of only the details that a parent is interested in.
Nyah Elizabeth Bacon now 20 and a half months old and now known affectionately as Ni or Ni Ni (Pronounced Nye Nye) the little scamp has certainly got an strong personality. She's into everything and always wants to do what you are doing - even if that means scribbling on my assignments while i'm writing, driving the car from the drivers seat or getting her hands all greasy while i'm fixing my bike.
For a while there she was a very good girl and did what she was told - like "close that cupboard", "no don't do that", "please pick that up" etc but now she needs to convinced at least 70% of the time. She's also very demanding these days and will kick up a real fuss if you don't let her do something - even if that something is standing on a rickety glass table or running out onto the road.
On the up-side she can often be talked out of things by explaining to her why she can't do it and i can get her to wait by explaining what i am doing step by step and how that will let me help her after. Sal's best trick with her is telling her "after" which normally works.
She also seems to be naturally very sharing - although she still doesn’t really know how to share toys with other kids and mostly just runs up and takes theirs with out a thought she always shares things that she likes with me or Sal or others she knows like Andrew (my house mate) or other family members.
The problem with her taking stuff from other kids is that she's bigger than most of them (82cm in August), stronger and more coordinated so she just grabs it and runs off. It's going to be a real learning experience for her with older kids.
Physically she's growing quite fast, in fact i'm a little worried that she is going to be too tall. Now she's got 12 teeth and can feed herself fairly well although not for a whole meal. She can throw and catch and has been kicking a soccer ball for months. We taught her to catch big balls just one week ago on fathers day at my sisters place and she keeps getting better at it, even her throws are getting better although half still go in all sorts of directions.
Language is an interesting one for her. I think she is a bit confused because her grandma and great grandma only speak Khmer to her and Sal speaks a mixture of both Khmer and English while i only speak English with a word or two of Khmer and occasional some Thai slips out while my parents only speak English She also understands some Vietnamese as Sal's sister and her b/f speak it her often. However she seems to get along very well and often prefers hand signals even if she knows a word. She has known "Hands, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Mouth, Tummy, Head etc for a long time in both languages and will point to them if asked in either. Now i'm teaching her to point to things like Knees, neck, hair etc as well. Until recently she probably couldn't quite say 50 words in both languages together although she could understand a huge amount more. Now she has begun repeating what we say and Sals mum has been teaching her some sentences in Khmer. She'll be talking in no time but I think that the first language she will speak fluently is Khmer seeing as how Sal only brings her to say here 2-3 days a week and how we are all going to stay in Cambodia for three months from December then for 6-12 months from Julyish next year. Oh well I guess i will just have to learn Khmer so that i she can't talk about me when i'm in the room.
One vice that we are trying hard to keep her away from is TV. Sal's family has a TV in every room and ther is at least one going pretty much 24/7. For a while she would demand to watch certain programs in the morning (like Hi5) or a video of 'Ice Age' that she loves because it has a baby in it, about 3 times a day. However after spending more time at my new place and playing outside she no longer asks (at least when she is here) as we almost never watch TV here.
In fact i think we found something that she likes much more - a swing.. but not just any swing, one that allows you to fly like super man. It is an old sheet i tied to the rope from teh big gumtree in the back yard that normally holds the kick bag. She can lie in it tummy down and still use her feet to push herself around, i think she spend half an hour playing with it not paying attention to anyone or anything else last time.
On the note of things she likes some of her favorite things are animals, reading (she now wants us to read the words of her books and not just look at the pictures), other kids, drawing, walking around outside (although she is scared of the garden gnome in the back yard), eating rice, pretending to drive the car, spinning on a chair, her teddy bears (her babies) and generally playing with anyone she knows especially outside.
'Babies' (other kids up to about 6 or more years old), driving the car and horses have top be her top three favourite things and her obsession with 'babies' (including pictures of herself) well and truly takes the number one spot.

Immunisation and New Teeth
Time: In the last week of March 2005
Sally gave Nyah the drops we got from the naturopath for Homeopathic Immunization for Whooping cough. At first her family thought there was something wrong because she was quite fussy which is unusual and was biting things including herself which is strange for any baby.
When i visited a few days later i was playing one of our little games where i put my knuckle it her mouth and she pretends to bite as hard as she can and this time is was surprised to receive quite a nip! Nyah had got her third and fourth Teeth, so now she can eat things closer to properly instead of using her two bottom teach like a peeler.
More baby details that only parents and families are interested in coming later.
